Principal's Desk

It is with a deep sense of responsibility and optimism that I assume the role of Principal of Udaynarayanpur Madhabilata Mahavidyalaya , an institution affiliated to the University of Calcutta and deeply rooted in the rich cultural legacy of the ancient Bhurishrestha Kingdom. Established in 2006 under the patronage of the local zamindars by the bank of the flowing Damodar, resplendent with scenic beauty, the college was envisioned to fulfil the educational aspirations of the people of this region, with a special emphasis on empowering women through higher education.

Guided by this founding vision, our continuous endeavour is to enhance the quality of higher education, provide meaningful academic and co-curricular exposure to our students, and leave a positive imprint on society through sustained social, environmental, and extension activities. Education, to us, is not merely the acquisition of knowledge, but a transformative journey towards holistic development and responsible citizenship.

Teaching–Learning Ambience

The institution accords the highest priority to effective teaching–learning processes and a transparent, fair evaluation system. The college offers B.A. and B.Sc Honours and General courses through 8 Honours departments. It is uniquely distinguished in the region by the inclusion of career-oriented and creative subjects such as Food & Nutrition, Music, and Physical Education. Well-equipped laboratories, a resource-rich library with reading rooms, internet facilities, and N-LIST access for teachers support academic excellence. Student-centric pedagogies—such as experiential learning, participative learning, problem-solving approaches, and ICT-enabled teaching—are integral to classroom practices.

The University of Calcutta conducts end-semester examinations, and the college strictly adheres to all university norms regarding internal, tutorial, and practical assessments. Departments also employ diverse evaluative tools to continuously enhance students’ academic performance and learning outcomes. Collaborations with various higher education institutions and agencies further contribute to the holistic development of our learners.

Research Initiatives, Innovation and Social Outreach

Although an undergraduate institution, the college actively nurtures a research culture through its Research and Development Cell (R&D). The R&D Cell facilitates research activities, encourages faculty to pursue doctoral studies, and supports participation in seminars, conferences, faculty development and refresher programmes. The institution has obtained multiple ISBNs for publishing academic books, and dedicated funds are allocated to promote research initiatives. Faculty members and departments also mentor students in research-related activities.

Innovation and entrepreneurship are fostered through initiatives such as Incubation Day, where students showcase eco-friendly, handmade products and gain first-hand exposure to entrepreneurial practices. Many more such initiatives are planned to nurture creativity, enterprise, and innovation among our students and alumni.

Our NSS unit remains a vibrant pillar of the institution, effectively fulfilling the motto “Education through Community Service” throughout the year, through in-house and outreach programmes.

Skill-building Add-On Courses

To enhance employability and practical competence, the college offers skill-based add-on courses that complement the academic curriculum. Programmes such as Spoken English & Soft Skills Development strengthen communication skills essential for professional growth, while Implementation of G.I.S. in Geographic Studies equips students with applied technical knowledge relevant to emerging academic and industry needs, thereby preparing them for diverse career pathways. Alongside these, plans are in place to introduce more value-added courses in the coming academic sessions.

Physical Infrastructure and Academic Support

The college boasts a serene, green, and plastic-free campus spread across 5.55 acres. It offers eight core courses along with B.A. and B.Sc. multidisciplinary programmes. Responding to growing academic needs, the infrastructure has been steadily expanded and now includes 18 classrooms, 3 smart classrooms, one virtual classroom, and four laboratories.

The library is fully furnished and equipped with an Integrated Library Management System (ILMS), along with separate reading rooms for students and teachers. A large playground and a Mini Indoor Games Hall support physical development and sports activities.

Student Welfare and Support Services

Student welfare remains central to our mission. Eligible students benefit from scholarships offered by government and non-government agencies, while economically vulnerable students are supported through free-ship facilities. The Career Counselling Cell and Placement Cell guide both current and former students, and a registered Alumni Association helps maintain lifelong bonds with the institution.

Grievances are addressed through the Grievance Redressal Cell, while sensitive issues are handled by the Internal Complaint Committee. Anti-ragging measures and awareness programmes ensure a safe and inclusive campus environment. The college also extends support to students facing mental health challenges, reaffirming its commitment to their holistic well-being.

As the college approaches its 20th year in July 2026, it proudly reflects on its academic progress, including the upgradation from NAAC Grade C (2016) to NAAC Grade B (2024) in the 2nd Cycle of Assessment and Accreditation under the aegis of a vibrant and active Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC).

Despite economic constraints, we remain steadfast in our resolve to create greater opportunities and facilities for the all-round development of our students. Achieving this vision requires the collective cooperation and goodwill of all stakeholders—students, guardians, staff, alumni, academicians, and well-wishers.

Together, let us continue to nurture knowledge, values, and excellence.
